[EAN: 9780810990111], Near Fine, [PU: H. N. Abrams], ART, SCULPTURE GARDEN, SMITHSONIAN, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall, Harry N Abrams Inc, New York, 1974 First Softbound Edition, First Printing, 770pp, foreword by S. Dillon Ripley, introduction by Abram Lerner [Director, The Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden], errata-slip laid-in, with 1,019 illustrations, including 290 plates in full color, catalogue [the catalogue provides selective documentation of the works of art included in this volume], index of works. Softbound. Very Good+ condition. Joseph H. Hirshhorn's gift to the nation of his collection of painting and sculpture was a historic cultural event. Now housed in The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden on the Mall of the nation's capital, this vast, incredibly diverse array of treasures, which includes one of the world's great collections of sculpture, spans the history of art from French sculpture of the 18th-century to the innovations of the 1970s. Especially rich in modern art, the collection is a veritable of such movements as Pop Art, Op Art, Action Painting, Minimal Art, and New Realism. Innumerable masters, among them Rodin, Picasso, Arp, Matisse, Brancusi, Moore, Lipchitz, Duchamp-Villon, Calder, and David Smith, are each represented by many works, often by rare or unusual examples of their genius. This volume presents a thousand selections from the collection, 290 reproduced in full color. Following a foreword by S. Dillon Ripley, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Abram Lerner, the Museum's Director, recounts in his introduction the remarkable story of the collection. Six authoritative essays on the art of individual periods follow. Linda Nochlin discusses French sculpture and American art of the 19th-century; Alfred Frankenstein analyzes the epoch-making years 1900-1913; John I. H. Bauer focuses on development of American art between the Armory Show of 1913, which launched modernism in America, and the socially conscious 1930s; Milton W. Brown surveys the period from the Depression to the end of World War II; Irving Sandler comments on Action Painting and other trends of the late 1940s and the 1950s; and Dore Ashton explores the myriad currents of the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to these essays, the book contains a meticulous catalogue of the works illustrated, including biographical data on each artist and such information as date, size, medium, inscriptions, provenance, exhibition history, and a bibliography for each work. An extremely valuable reference in itself. Comprehensive in its treatment of styles and movements, overflowing with artistic genius, scholarly and yet highly readable, this volume is an ideal introduction to the history of art in modern times as well as one of the most extraordinary pictorial archives ever published. Heavy volume: extra postage will apply.
