Very Good Condition. Institutional stamp on front endpaper. UNREAD. Bottle of notes was commissioned by Middlesbrough Council and is the first public sculpture in the United Kingdom by the reowned artist partnership of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen have produced works in Chicago, Des Moines, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Dallas, Los Angeles, Barcelona and Dusseldorf, and this new addition to their prestigious list of large-scale projects puts Middlesbrough into a truly international context. Bottle of notes represents an inspiration to artistic vision, a spur to partnership and collaboration and a catalyst for change and development. It constitutes a new benchmark for public art in Britain and provided an important marker for the UK region of the visual arts festival in 1996, which was part of the arts 2000 scheme launched by the Arts council in 1991 to celebrate Britain's artistic achievements and to lay the foundations for cultural life in a new millennium. To all of the sponsors, fabricators and project officers who have been involved in the realisation of this masterwork, and most particularly to claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, I offer my warmest congratulations and gratitude. Book Description: Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen's monumental sculpture Bottle of Notes, which soars nearly thirty-five feet above the city of Middlesbrough, tilted at an angle almost as startling as the Tower of Pisa, is the first public sculpture in the United Kingdom by these two internationally renowned artists. This book, which contains over sixty colour illustrations of Oldenburg and van Bruggen's preparatory sketches and models, and photographs of the finished sculpture in situ, examines the sculpture, Bottle of Notes, from its conception to its final installation some seven years later. The text explores the inspiration behind the Bottle of Notes, and looks at the precedents to the Bottle in Oldenburg's work, in particular his large-scale sculptures. The final part of the book documents the making of the sculpture. Bottle of Notes was commissioned by Middlesbrough Borough Council, and the ingredient of the site which most captured Oldenburg's imagination was the history of Captain Cook, born in Middlesbrough. The city again provided the inspiration for the medium, the tempered-steel used in the sculpture echoing Middlesbrough's industrial heritage and continuing the legacy of the town's Ironmasters. This book offers a fascinating survey of the evolution of Oldenburg and van Bruggen's first large-scale sculpture in the United Kingdom, and also explores the role of public sculpture in modern urban life in an age where the siting and function of public art have become increasingly controversial. : About the Author: Richard Cork Size: 1.3 x 21 x 27.3 cm. 72 pages.
