On 1 January 1969 a revolution occurred in the provision of public transport in the UK when the Transport Act of 1968 came into effect. This Act resulted in the creation of two new nationalised bus companies: the National Bus Company (NBC) serving England and Wales and the Scottish Bus Group north of the border. When the NBC was formed, the Tilling Group companies, which had been already nationalised before the 1968 Act, were joined with the newly nationalised bus and coach interests of BET. Over the next few years, NBC was to expand further, with London Country coming under its control on 1 January 1970 and several old-established independents, such as West Riding and Provincial, also succumbing. Initially, NBC was slow to impose a corporate identity on its subsidiaries, but from the early 1970s the traditional liveries and names gradually disappeared, a process that was accelerated once the centralised design and buying of new buses and coaches arose. In National Bus Company: The Early Years, noted bus photographer and author Kevin Lane goes back more than three decades to the first years of NBC. Examining each of the constituent companies, he provides a guide to the liveries and operations at the time as well as examining the impact of nationalisation on each of the companies concerned. Illustrated in both colour and mono, the book provides the reader with a graphic reminder of the nature of the vehicles and operations controlled by NBC in its first years. Comprehensive in its cover, National Bus Company: The Early Years will become an accepted reference guide to this critical phase in the development of the British bus and coach industry, and will be sought out by all those interested in the history, vehicles and operation of bus services during this crucial period.
