Citizen Perot : His Life & Times - Paperback

1996, ISBN: 9780679447313

Hardcover, ID: 339607462

Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.. 306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." Mino r fi nger m ark o n fro nt fre e end paper, tiny fain stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Excerpt: . . . by the gross negligence of the defendants servants conirolling the train, you may give to ihe plaintiff punitive or exemplary damages. This court, speaking by Mr. Justice Davis. and approving and applying the rule of exemplary damages, as stated in Qulgleys Case, held that this was a misdirection, and that the failure of the employes to use the care that was required to avoid the accident, whether called I. -ross or ordinary negligence, did not authorize the jury to visit the company with damages beyond the limit of compensation for the injury actually inflicted. To do this. there must have been some willful misconduct. or that entire want of care which would raise the presumption of n. conscious indiiIerence to consequences. Nothing of this kind can be imputed to the persons in charge of the train; and the court, therefore, misdirected the jui . 91 U. S. 495. In Railway Co. v. Harris, the railroad company, as the record showed, by an armed force of several hundred men, acting as its agents and employes, and organized and commanded by its vice president and assistant general manager, attacked with deadly weapons the agents and employes of another company in possession of a railroad, and forcibly drove them out, and in so doing fired upon and injured one of them, who therenpon brought an action against the corporation, and recovered a verdict and judgment under an instruction that the jury were not limited to compensatory damages. but could give punitive or exemplary damages, if it was found that the defendant acted with bad intent, and in pursuance of an unlawful purpose to forcibly take possession of the railway occupied by the other company, and in so doing shot the piaintiff.
