Macdonald & Co. , London, 1971. first UK edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 5 1`/2 x 8 1/2, VG/VG condition ( dj price clipped), xv, 170 pages, illus, maps, index. ....................................... In Norway's Kaafjord, a thousand miles from the nearest British bomber base, but only fifty miles from the route taken by every allied convoy bound for Russia, lurked the 43,000 ton German battleship, Tirpitz. The year was 1943 and Churchill had said, "the whole strategy of the war turns at this period on this ship," so it was vital that "the beast," as he described her, be somehow destroyed or put out of action. Against All Odds is the fantastic story of how a few young men, working in appalling conditions with hastily. improvised and sometimes unreliable equipment, penetrated the massive defences surrounding the Tirpitz and irreparably crippled her. Air attack had failed when the Tirpitz was within reach: attack by surface craft or conventional submarine was now clearly impossible. It was therefore necessary to invent a totally new type of midget submarine for the job in hand. It must be strong enough to be towed across the North Sea and to operate under its own power off the Norwegian coast, shallow enough to cross a minefield on the surface, sufficiently manoeuvrable to navigate submerged up fjords, small enough to pass undetected by the mass of antisubmarine instruments deployed round the Tirpitz's lair, and—most important of all—it must carry a pair of two ton charges of amatol. ............................................................................................................................................The product of these specifications and much ingenuity was the X-Craft, one of the oddest, most cramped, potentially most lethal weapons of war ever devised since the Trojan Horse. Meticulously planned and rehearsed, the attack succeeded partly by reason of this training but largely on the strength of a number of brilliant improvisations forced on the crews by changes of circumstance that no one could have foreseen. Against All Odds is, therefore, a story of steadily mounting suspense where the expected seldom happens and individual character and decision play a major part. Never before told in full from the inception of the new weapon to its triumphantly successful use, the X-Craft's story adds a chapter to British Naval history that can seldom have been equalled for the bravery and ingenuity shown or the excitement of the telling., New York: Baen, 1997. Fantastic novel where a most sensible, down to earth hero saves a Byzantine christian city with unexpected help from mythical beasts from the Pagan Greek past.Entertaining.. First Pbk.Ed.. Pbk.. New York. 1993. Penguin. Reprinted Penguin Paperback Edition. Small Tear To Wrappers Along Near Front Bottom Spine, Otherwise Very Good In Slightly Worn Wrappers. 126 pages. paperback. 9780140178210. keywords: Literature England Women Fairy Tales. inventory # 16836. FROM THE PUBLISHER - From familiar fairy tales and legends – Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss-in-Boots, Beauty and the Beast, vampires, werewolves - Angela Carter has created an absorbing collection of dark, sensual, fantastic stories. Angela Carter reexamines fairy tales from a feminist perspective in her collection of fairy tales ‘The Bloody Chamber.’ Carter, who has made the distinction between folk tales as a pre-capitalist folk form and fairy tales as a bourgeois art form, uses intertextuality to explore the nuances of sexuality and gender relations in short stories such as ‘The Bloody Chamber’ and ‘The Snow Child.’ By changing the cultural context of established fairy tales such as ‘Bluebeard’ and ‘Snow White,’ Carter creates a new perspective. Turtledove, Harry

Title:

Thessalonica (Baen Fantasy)

ISBN:

0671877615

George the shoemaker is worrying a lot lately about life in the Roman Empire. Cities north of Thessalonica have fallen to the swarming Germanic tribes, who have brought demons with them. Even the satyrs, centaurs, and nymphs are frightened. George's city, his family, his faith, all that he holds dear are surrounded by a rising tide of pagan darkness, and for George, that is unacceptable. He is a simple artisan, but that doesn't mean he can't fight.
