The Mascot - First edition

2007, ISBN: 9780670018260

Paperback, Hardcover, ID: 360103970

New York, NY: Wilfred Funk Inc., 1940. Stated First Edition. This is the original 1940 printing. The memoirs of the author's political activity in Nebraska on behalf of the Democratic Party from the 1890's into the 1930's. Brown hardcover with lettering in black panels, 360 pages, photo illustrations, mostly of Mullen and his family. Also has photo of Robert T. Meyer and the Zion Lutheran school, where he was arrested in 1920 in what became the "Freedom of Education" case. Hostility against Germans following the First World War caused the state of Nebraska to pass a law prohibiting the use of any language but English in schools and churches in the state. Meyer was arrested and convicted of violating the law for reading the Bible in German to one of his students in the one room school. The case, Meyer vs Nebraska, was upheld in the state supreme, then appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled that the state law was unconstitutional. Arthur Mullen was the lead attorney representing Meyer in the Supreme Court trial. A great book for local history, political history and legal history. Ex-library with usual markings, but otherwise in great condition, with no markings in the text, clean bright pages, tightly bound. Minimal wear to cover, though there is some light fading. Illustrated with Black and White Photographs. 418 pages As a five-year-old during the Second World War, Alex Kurzem had watched from a tree as the entire Jewish population of his village, including his family, were murdered by a German-led execution squad. He scavenged in the forests of Russia for several months before falling into the hands of a Latvian police brigade that later became an SS company. After one soldier discovered this young boy was actually Jewish, Alex was made to promise never to reveal his true identity – to forget his old life, his family, and even his name. The young boy became the company's mascot and part of the Nazi propaganda machine responsible for killing his own people. . 1st Edition. Hardback., Viking, 2007

[SR: 584985], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780670018260], Viking Adult, Viking Adult, Book, [PU: Viking Adult], 2007-11-01, Viking Adult, One man’s struggle with memory and prejudice on the way to recovering his past Mark Kurzem was happily ensconced in his academic life at Oxford when his father, Alex, showed up on his doorstep with a terrible secret to tell. When a Nazi death squad raided his village at the outset of World War II, Jewish five-year-old Alex Kurzem escaped. After surviving the Russian winter by foraging for food and stealing clothes off dead soldiers, he was discovered by a Nazi-led Latvian police brigade that later became an SS unit. Not knowing he was Jewish, they made him their mascot, dressing the little “corporal” in uniform and toting him from massacre to massacre. Terrified, the resourceful Alex charmed the highest echelons of the Latvian Third Reich, eventually starring in a Nazi propaganda film. When the war ended he was sent to Australia with a family of Latvian refugees. Fearful of being discovered—as either a Jew or a Nazi—Alex kept the secret of his childhood, even from his loving wife and children. But he grew increasingly tormented and became determined to uncover his Jewish roots and the story of his past. Shunned by a local Holocaust organization, he reached out to his son Mark for help in reclaiming his identity. A survival story, a grim fairy-tale, and a psychological drama, this remarkable memoir asks provocative questions about identity, complici, 916612, Jewish, 2365, Ethnic & National, 2, Biographies & Memoirs, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 3048891, Memoirs, 2, Biographies & Memoirs, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 4, Children's Books, 2967, Action & Adventure, 3371, Activities, Crafts & Games, 2787, Animals, 2870, Arts, Music & Photography, 2351, Biographies, 3284, Cars, Trains & Things That Go, 2655476011, Children's Cookbooks, 2970, Classics, 3014, Comics & Graphic Novels, 2909, Computers & Technology, 7009080011, Early Learning, 3176, Education & Reference, 2977, Fairy Tales, Folk Tales & Myths, 3344091011, Geography & Cultures, 1084192, Growing Up & Facts of Life, 2917, History, 3069, Holidays & Celebrations, 3003, Humor, 2966, Literature & Fiction, 3016, Mysteries & Detectives, 3101, Religions, 3013, Science Fiction & Fantasy, 3207, Science, Nature & How It Works, 3400, Sports & Outdoors, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 4994, Holocaust, 4992, Jewish, 5035, World, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books
