TYRWHITT OF THE HARWICH FORCE - The Life of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Reginald Tyrwhitt - Paperback

1992, ISBN: 9780356045306

Hardcover, ID: 478648419

Motorbooks. Osceola, WI, 1992, first edition.. 192 pp, 10 5/8" H, soft cover. ISBN 0879385855 "(A) unique collection of biographies of twelve of the greatest and most interesting American fighter pilots of World War II. With the exception of Tom McGuire and Butch O'Hare - who were killed in a ction - these biographies (of John Alison, Charles MacDonald, Joe Foss, Tex Hill, Marion Carl, Jim Howard, Tom Blackburn, Jim Goodson, Perry Dahl, and Jerry Collinsworth) are based on extensive interviews with the aces and told largely in their w o r d s. Their recollections are vivid and their stories are fresh because these are the first detailed biographies of most of the aces. The interviews are illustrated with more than 140 photographs, many from the aces' personal collections, sho wi ng t he mselves during the war, their squadron mates, their aircraft, and the nose art and markings that made them stand out." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor rubbing. Very Good+., Motorbooks. Osceola, WI, 1992, first edition., London 1973, Macdonald & Janes, UK First edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6x9, VG/VG condition, ( very minor dj edge wear), xiv, 336 pages, illustrations, maps, notes, bibliog, index. -----------------------------------------------------------------During the First World War the names of Beatty, Keyes and Tyrwhitt stood for all that was most tenacious, active and daring in Britain's conduct of her war at sea. In this first full-length study of Tyrwhitt's life and career, A. Temple Patterson, the eminent naval historian and biographer of Jellicoe, triumphantly confirms Tyrwhitt's stature as one of England's greatest fighting admirals. Bold and high spirited as a boy, Tyrwhitt early found his true vocation in command of the tiny, cranky TB 78 off the Newfoundland coast. Following this with commands in a number of ships of that newly invented type, the destroyer, he was by the outbreak of war in 1914 in command of all the destroyer flotillas of the Home Fleet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------Operating from Harwich with two flotillas, later to be joined by a light cruiser squadron, he displayed throughout the long years of the war exactly those gifts for which his first masters, Churchill and 'Jackie' Fisher, were looking. Constantly vigilant, tireless and bold in his efforts to bring the enemy to action, always ready to seize on or initiate new ideas (the carrier was effectively his invention), he fully earned the name which the press bestowed on him, `the stormy petrel of the navy'. After the war came many commands which for such a man were less inspiring, yet into them all he managed to inject something of his unique quality, whether coping with the evacuation of frenzied refugees from Smyrna, protecting British lives in China with unexpected diplomatic restraint during the take-over by Chiang Kai-chek, or as Admiral of the Nore and `elder statesman' playing an important part in putting right the disastrous mishandling in the Admiralty which had produced the mutiny at Invergordon.
