From This Day Forward: Commitment, Marriage, and Family in Lesbian and Gay Relationships - hardcover

[SR: 4989448], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780312175429], St. Martin's Press, St. Martin's Press, Book, [PU: St. Martin's Press], St. Martin's Press, Gretchen Stiers has talked with scores of gay and lesbian couples, delving into their personal feelings about their relationships and how they define them. At a time when the gay and lesbian community is transforming itself from a community once perceived as being composed of singles to a community increasingly composed of families with and without children, From This Day Forward presents an up-to-date look at gay and lesbian lifestyles and shows the complexity of community life at the end of the twentieth century. What Stiers finds is surprising. Lesbian women and gay men who advocate inclusion in the institutions of marriage and family both accept and resist traditional conceptions of marriage and family life, thereby providing another variation of the idea of what really makes a family. Provocative and revealing, From This Day Forward is a book that will be read by lesbian women, gay men, their families, their ministers, their priests, their rabbis, and anyone interested in their lives. , In this timely study, based on a doctoral dissertation, sociologist Gretchen A. Stiers presents the results of 90 face-to-face interviews with lesbians and gay men on the subject of commitment ceremonies and same-sex marriage. "At their core," she argues, "same-sex ceremonies are rites of integration as well as rites of passage; their two primary objectives are the creation of family and the building of community." Although her reliance on long, chatty quotations jars at times with her academic prose, Stiers manages to convey the surprising breadth of responses in the gay and lesbian communities today to issues such as the legalization of same-sex marriage and its importance for gay rights in general. Most lesbians and gays believe they should have the legal right to marry, for example, yet when asked if they would consider marriage themselves if the laws changed, Stiers's subjects replied in unromantic terms: "Maybe for the legal and economic benefits"; "We could sign up for the family medical plan"; "Yes ... we could get matching towels and all sorts of appliances and things." --Regina Marler , 10703, Nonfiction, 10705, Activism, 10710, Bisexuality, 10712, Civil Rights, 10714, Coming Out, 10744, Philosophy, 10746, Sexuality, 292220, Transgender, 301889, Gay & Lesbian, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 4732, Interpersonal Relations, 4729, Relationships, 10, Health, Fitness & Dieting, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 16244291, Gay & Lesbian, 11298, Specific Demographics, 11232, Social Sciences, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 491460, Gay & Lesbian Studies, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books
