King of Romance: Portrait of Alexandre Dumas - hardcover

1979, ISBN: 9780241102640

ID: 849420520

London: Hamish Hamilton Ltd. Very Good/Very Good. 1979. Frirst Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo 0241102642 Dust jacket complete except price clipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. 231 pages clean and tight. "The King of Romance" was the affectionate title bestowed on Alexandre Dumas by the last of his many mistresses, the American actress Adah Menken. She was not thinking only of such colourful stories as The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte-Cristo, which have delighted successive generations down to this day. For everything about Dumas was touched with the spirit of romance - even his origins: he was the son of a general who fought under Napoleon in Italy and Egypt and whose own parents were a French marquis and a beautiful negress purchased in a Haitian slave-market. In his twenties Dumas established himself as one of the leading Romantic playwrights and in his forties emerged as probably the most popular novelist in France. His 'life was as full of glamour and adventure as his works. He travelled extensively, into the remoter provinces of the Russian Empire and the semibarbarosis kingdoms of North Africa. He ought on the barricades during the July Revolution and marched with Garibaldi when he liberated Sicily at the head of his thousand redshirts. He made an enormous fortune out of his writing and yet died a poor man. Basing himself on Dumas's own frank memoirs and surviving letters, Professor Hemmings also draws a fascinating picture of the numerous love-affairs that scandalized his contemporaries and of his often stormy relations with his wife and with his various illegitimate children. ., Hamish Hamilton Ltd, 1979
