The Essential Turing: Seminal Writings in Computing, Logic, Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, and Artificial Life plus The Secrets of Enigma - Paperback

2004, ISBN: 0198250800

[SR: 468231], Paperback, [EAN: 9780198250807], Clarendon Press, Clarendon Press, Book, [PU: Clarendon Press], 2004-11-18, Clarendon Press, Alan Turing was one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. In 1935, aged 22, he developed the mathematical theory upon which all subsequent stored-program digital computers are modeled. At the outbreak of hostilities with Germany in September 1939, he joined the Government Codebreaking team at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire and played a crucial role in deciphering Engima, the code used by the German armed forces to protect their radio communications. Turing's work on the version of Enigma used by the German navy was vital to the battle for supremacy in the North Atlantic. He also contributed to the attack on the cyphers known as "Fish," which were used by the German High Command for the encryption of signals during the latter part of the war. His contribution helped to shorten the war in Europe by an estimated two years. After the war, his theoretical work led to the development of Britain's first computers at the National Physical Laboratory and the Royal Society Computing Machine Laboratory at Manchester University.Turing was also a founding father of modern cognitive science, theorizing that the cortex at birth is an "unorganized machine" which through "training" becomes organized "into a universal machine or something like it." He went on to develop the use of computers to model biological growth, launching the discipline now referred to as Artificial Life. The papers in this book are the key works for understanding Turing's phenomenal contribution across all these fields. The collection includes Turing's declassified wartime "Treatise on the Enigma"; letters from Turing to Churchill and to codebreakers; lectures, papers, and broadcasts which opened up the concept of AI and its implications; and the paper which formed the genesis of the investigation of Artifical Life., 3887, AI & Machine Learning, 132552011, Computer Vision & Pattern Recognition, 3890, Expert Systems, 280291, Intelligence & Semantics, 280292, Machine Theory, 271581011, Natural Language Processing, 3896, Neural Networks, 3508, Computer Science, 5, Computers & Technology, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 4134, Graphics & Design, 4135, 3D Graphics, 10806600011, 3D Printing, 6133990011, Adobe, 4075, CAD, 227543, Computer Modelling, 4094, Desktop Publishing, 4097, Electronic Documents, 3937, Rendering & Ray Tracing, 4033, User Experience & Usability, 5, Computers & Technology, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 4935, Europe, 4940, Belgium, 4952, France, 4954, Germany, 9332123011, Great Britain, 4835, Greenland, 4959, Italy, 4968, Netherlands, 4972, Romania, 15812231, Scandinavia, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5031, World War II, 5011, Military, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11986, Linguistics, 11970, Words, Language & Grammar, 21, Reference, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 226685, Behavioral Sciences, 11237, Anthropology, 226686, Behavioral Psychology, 573358, Cognitive Psychology, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 13871, History & Philosophy, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 13884, Mathematics, 226699, Applied, 226700, Geometry & Topology, 13942, History, 13944, Infinity, 13955, Mathematical Analysis, 13957, Matrices, 13961, Number Systems, 13965, Popular & Elementary, 226698, Pure Mathematics, 13979, Reference, 13981, Research, 13985, Study & Teaching, 13989, Transformations, 13991, Trigonometry, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 15811861, Cognitive, 6511980011, Psychology, 173514, Medical Books, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11019, Philosophy, 11021, Aesthetics, 15811681, Analytic Philosophy, 11023, Consciousness & Thought, 886132, Criticism, 11025, Eastern, 11035, Epistemology, 11037, Ethics & Morality, 11041, Free Will & Determinism, 11045, Good & Evil, 11047, Greek & Roman, 11049, History & Surveys, 11053, Logic & Language, 11054, Medieval Thought, 11055, Metaphysics, 15811591, Methodology, 11057, Modern, 11059, Modern Renaissance, 886134, Movements, 11065, Political, 11070, Reference, 11072, Religious, 15811601, Social Philosophy, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 468230, History, 491410, Africa, 684268011, Ancient, 491412, Asia, 491414, Europe, 491418, Latin America, 684269011, Middle East, 684270011, Military, 491422, United States, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 468232, Philosophy, 491424, Aesthetics, 684279011, Epistemology, 491426, Ethics, 491428, History & Surveys, 684280011, Logic, 491432, Metaphysics, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491462, Linguistics, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 468218, Mathematics, 491542, Algebra & Trigonometry, 491544, Calculus, 491546, Geometry, 491548, Statistics, 468216, Science & Mathematics, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

The ideas that gave birth to the computer age. Alan Turing, pioneer of computing and WWII codebreaker, was one of the most important and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. In this volume for the first time his key writings are made available to a broad, non-specialist readership. They make fascinating reading both in their own right and for their historic significance: contemporary computational theory, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and artificial life all spring from this ground-breaking work, which is also rich. in philosophical and logical insight. An introduction by leading Turing expert Jack Copeland provides the background and guides the reader through the selection. The paperback is irresistibly priced for individual purchase. - ;Alan Turing, pioneer of computing and WWII codebreaker, is one of the most important and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. Alan Turing FRS OBE, (1912-1954) studied mathematics at King's College, Cambridge. He was elected a Fellow of King's in March 1935, at the age of only 22. In the same year he invented the abstract computing machines - now known simply as Turing machines - on which all subsequent stored-program digital computers are modelled. During 1936-1938 Turing continued his studies, now at Princeton University. He completed a PhD in mathematical logic, analysing the notion of 'intuition' in mathematics and introducing the idea of oracular computation, now fundamental in mathematical recursion theory. An 'oracle' is an abstract device able to solve mathematical problems too difficult for the universal Turing machine. In the summer of 1938 Turing returned to his Fellowship at King's. When WWII started in 1939 he joined the wartime headquarters of the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire. Building on earlier work by Polish cryptanalysts, Turing contributed crucially to the design of electro-mechanical machines ('bombes') used to decipher Enigma, the code by means of which the German armed forces sought to protect their radio communications. Turing's work on the. version of Enigma used by the German navy was vital to the battle for supremacy in the North Atlantic. He also contributed to the attack on the cyphers known as 'Fish'. Based on binary teleprinter code, Fish was used during the latter part of the war in preference to morse-based Enigma f Computers Computers eBook, Oxford University Press, UK
